Anne Braaten

Visually capturing her world has been intrinsic to Anne since she was 12 and hauling around a prized Kodak Hawkeye 110 instamatic camera. The cameras have changed but Anne continues to find peace and belonging while hiking through all sorts of weather with the Soggy Dogs in her life.

Anne’s interests have generally been in the big picture. During her research on brown bears she was influenced by Japanese photographer Michio Hoshino, who demonstrated that some of the most powerful wildlife portraits are of animals within their greater context. So perhaps ironically, her current explorations are of individual subjects within her photographs, beauties easily overlooked or lost in their surroundings. When a subject is found amidst the whole she digitally extracts it until the inner fine art comes to life. As a synesthete she hears color so in a sense the result is musical magic. Once this process is complete the subject is layered over black. The final piece is a celebration of life, the triumph of loveliness and light over absolute absence of color.
